Entrepreneurship is a 34 page long career education motivational text book geared towards encouraging self-employment among young people.
Unemployment has become a global challenge to governments both in the" first" and "third" world. Despite being a diamond rich small country; with a small population of roughly 2.430,362 (worldpopulationreview.com, 2022) , and despite being classified as a middle income society, Botswana has not been spared from the harsh realities and challenges of an increase in unemployment.
The emergence of COVID-19 hasnt made things any easier for Botswana, and specifically for the youth. To survive the challenges, more and more young people engaged in small enterprise with financial assistance through government programmes such as CEDA (Citizen Etrepreneural Development Agency), Youth Development Fund ( YDF), with the help and mentorship by LEA (Local Enterprise Authority) and many more. However, COVID-19 created a dark cloud over these programmes as fund had to diverted to address the pandemic.
Nonetheless, this booklet, highlights the experiences and /or testimonies of many young people who survived through self-employement through various activities to generate income , create jobs for themselves and for other young people. The book goes on to outline the anticipated challenges encoutered in self-employment.
The book was published before the pandemic, Some of these small entreprises probably did not survive the pandemic; this calls for a follow-up and/or a new edition or possibly a completely different project to assess how COVID-19 Impacted the SMEs and how many have survived and how they survived the lockdowns and the impact of COVID-19 in general and how many closed down etc. and if they had to modify the way they provided their services to meet the need of their clients and in order to keep their heads above the water.
Though the setting is in Botswana, the booklet could be generalized to other areas of the continent and beyond. We live in a global village, and one can customaze the scenarios high-lighted in the book, and look at their own setting, their environment and assess their potential, capabilities, talent, where their passion lies , and what can work for them in their respective environment.
Entrepreneurship also looks at qualities of an entrepreneur, what makes a good entrepreneur and who is cut out for Entrepreneurship and what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.
But its important to start by establishing who you are?
What are your values?
What are your strengths and your limitations?
What excites you? etc.
